In the story found in Matthew 14:22-33 and Mark 6:45-52, Jesus performs a miraculous feat by walking on water. After feeding thousands of people with just five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him in a boat while he goes to pray alone on a mountainside. As the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee, a storm overtakes them and they become terrified. In the darkness of the night, they suddenly see Jesus walking towards them on the water. Initially mistaking him for a ghost, they cry out in fear.
But Jesus reassures them, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Peter, one of the disciples, boldly responds to Jesus, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus invites Peter to join him, and Peter steps out of the boat and walks on the water towards Jesus. However, when Peter notices the strong wind, he becomes afraid and begins to sink. He cries out to Jesus for help, and Jesus immediately reaches out his hand to rescue him, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and trust in Jesus, even in the midst of life’s storms and challenges. Just as Peter was able to walk on water when he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus, we too can experience miraculous moments when we rely on our faith in him.Jesus’ ability to walk on water demonstrates his divine power and authority over all of creation. It is a miraculous event that reveals his deity and proves that nothing is impossible for him. By walking on water, Jesus also shows his disciples and the world that he is the Son of God and that he has the power to overcome any obstacle or challenge that may come their way. Through this miraculous act, Jesus teaches his followers to have faith in him, even when faced with the most impossible circumstances. Just as Peter was able to walk on water when he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus, we too can experience the same miraculous power in our own lives when we trust in him completely.
