In the biblical story of Jesus walking on water, found in both Matthew 14:22-33 and Mark 6:45-52, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him in a boat while he goes up a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the disciples find themselves being tossed about by the waves in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus then comes to them, walking on the water. At first, the disciples are terrified, thinking they are seeing a ghost. But Jesus reassures them, saying “Take courage; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Peter, one of the disciples, then asks Jesus to call him out onto the water. Jesus does so, and Peter begins to walk towards him. However, when Peter takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the wind and waves, he begins to sink. Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and catches Peter, saying “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” They then both get into the boat, and the wind dies down.
This story serves as a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of keeping our focus on Jesus during life’s storms. Just as Peter was able to walk on water when he kept his eyes on Jesus, we too can overcome any challenges that come our way by trusting in Him.
