Then they went away and started talking and planning among themselves, realizing that their money had been returned to their sacks. They were afraid and said to each other, “What has God done to us?” When they arrived at their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him everything that had happened to them; they said, “The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.” But Jacob refused to believe them and said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.” Jacob’s sons were troubled and confused by their father’s response. They had no choice but to return to Egypt to buy more food, hoping to find relief from the ongoing famine.
