In Numbers 13:25-30 NLT, the Israelites were on the brink of entering the Promised Land. Moses had chosen twelve men, one from each tribe, to spy out the land of Canaan. They spent forty days exploring the land, from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob near Lebo-Hamath.
When they returned, the spies reported that the land was indeed flowing with milk and honey, just as God had promised. They brought back a cluster of grapes so large it took two men to carry it. However, they also shared their fears, stating that the land was filled with fortified cities and powerful giants.
Despite the majority of the spies’ fear, Caleb spoke up and confidently declared that they should go up and take possession of the land, for God would surely give it to them. However, the other spies disagreed, claiming that the people of Canaan were too strong to conquer. The Israelites were swayed by the negative report and began to doubt God’s promise, resulting in forty years of wandering in the wilderness before they finally entered the Promised Land.
