In the book of Genesis chapter 38 verse 4 of the King James Version Bible, it is written, “And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.” This verse is referring to the story of Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar. Tamar had married Judah’s eldest son, Er, who was wicked in the eyes of the Lord, and the Lord put him to death. According to the custom of the time, Judah gave Tamar to his second son, Onan, to marry and raise up offspring for his brother. However, Onan did not want to fulfill his duty to raise up offspring for his brother, so he practiced a form of birth control and spilled his seed on the ground. This displeased the Lord, and he also was put to death. This passage serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of honoring one’s obligations.
