“Murder in the Red Barn” is a notorious crime that took place in Polstead, Suffolk, England in 1827. It involved the murder of Maria Marten by her lover William Corder. The story gained widespread attention due to its scandalous nature and the macabre details surrounding the crime.

Maria Marten was a young woman who lived with her father in a village near the Red Barn. She had been in a secret relationship with Corder for several years, leading to her becoming pregnant. On the night of May 18th, 1827, Maria left her home to meet Corder at the Red Barn, where he promised they would elope. However, this was a ruse by Corder to get Maria alone and ultimately kill her.

Corder shot Maria in the barn and buried her body in a shallow grave. He proceeded to conceal the crime and concoct a story that Maria had left with another man. However, Maria’s disappearance raised suspicion, and her body was eventually discovered in the Red Barn. Corder was arrested, tried, and ultimately sentenced to death for his crime.

The murder in the Red Barn captivated the public and became a sensationalized tale that has since been immortalized in folklore and literature.
